🤓 BWM01: Finding that perfect domain name

Hello!

Let’s kick off this Build With Me (BWM) series with how I got the initial idea for Block by Block.

While working on the Rockbase theme (coming very soon), I realized how powerful the NEW way of building with WordPress is.

But… While powerful, it creates some challenges for developers and users who are not experienced in the new way of WordPress. It moves away from what people know and into a new way of thinking.

With a little bit of practice, I believe everyone can master the site editing experience, and I am excited about what this means for the future of creating with WordPress.

I have been working with the block editor for 2 years and building high-quality websites leveraging the power of the core blocks. My website uses core blocks and very little custom CSS or code.

You can build fantastic and fast websites with a system and creative thinking.

Benefits of using the WordPress block editor:

  • Free
  • Part of WordPress’s core
  • Super fast (avoid page builder bloat)
  • Great editing experience for clients when configured properly
  • Future proof your website
  • Code free editing (mostly)
  • Create design consistency

So, with all these benefits, you would think that all the WP developers, designers, and users would be jumping on board. But they are not. The new way vastly differs from the traditional way of building with WordPress, and people are resistant to change.

The opportunity

What is missing is the opportunity for users to see how it works and learn how to create with it. It takes practice (like anything).

However, if you are running a WP agency, you do not have the time to learn the new way. You have projects coming down the pipeline that need development and no time to learn a new system.

But what if you could learn it quickly and start using the WP site editor and block experience for your next project? You would probably jump on it!

That is what I want to create. A place where WP users can learn through the power of fun exercises how to embrace the power of WordPress block themes.

With my new plan in mind, I set out to find a domain name that will work.

How I go about choosing a domain name

My thoughts around choosing domain names is to pick one. It matters, but not more than taking action. I do not think a domain name will make or break your idea.

My best advice around domain names is to spend an hour researching and finding a few options. Once you have 2-3, give it a day, and on the next day, purchase the one that jumps back out to you.

For this project I chose blockbyblockwp.com This domain name has a .com, and it makes it clear what it is all about. Simple, available, mine!

Next week I will be sharing my process for creating the landing page, but if you want to get a sneak peak you can check it out: https://blockbyblockwp.com

My Block by Block Thesis

I see an opportunity to create an engaging course highly focused on learning through actively building with WordPress.

The new way of working with WordPress will require a different approach than what worked before, and I want to share everything I have learned so you can create better, faster, and more straightforward WordPress websites.

Whenever a new idea comes into my head, I do a bit of research. I will look at others in similar spaces and see what they have done that works. For this particular idea, I found Wes Boss and his courses, which I have taken a few.

His courses work because they are engaging. When you go through them at the end, you have actually built something; you have something tangible to show for your efforts.

I want to take this same approach in the WordPress space.

So, the concept is validated in this way.

Next Week

Next week I will be sharing my thoughts and process for creating a landing page. The goal of my landing page is to validate the idea before spending too much time on creating the product.

Keep Creating!
Chris

P.S. Do you use Instagram? I share a lot of behind the scenes on there, give me a follow and see how I run my business!

👋 Hello Nerds! Today, I want to dive into one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced this year while traveling: finding time to work. As we move from one place to another, the days we’re not on the road are often spent exploring our current location. Balancing work with this lifestyle has required some creative solutions. Working in the car? One strategy I’ve adopted is working in the car. Yes, you read that right—in the car! It’s not always easy, battling the sun’s glare, the bumps on the...

👋 Hello! You can read this on CH.com if you prefer. You can always edit it…. As developers we can login to FTP, open the file, and make the change. It is that easy. Don’t overthink it. As a designer you can adjust that landing page design later, or fix the social template post launch. We spend so much time hoping to get it just perfect. But the truth is, we need to focus on getting the MVP out there. Figure out the core functionality and focus on that. Once that is ready, ship it. You can add...

Hello! When I first had the idea for Block by Block, I was excited. I opened up Notion and started to write out the idea and concept furiously. I was ready to go all in. But then I slowed myself down. I needed to validate the idea before I spent my time on it. Validation You can validate an idea in many ways. My process is quite simple. I look for tiny moments of validation and let them continue building on each other. These moments continue to stack up, which creates momentum for your idea....
