🤓 BWM00: Ever wonder how to shift from service to product?

Hello!

I have spent a lot of time on Nerd Notes talking about freelancing.

But I have a confession to make. I no longer make the majority of my income from freelance clients.

Over the past year, I have been migrating away from clients and into the product world. My reason for doing this was to get more freedom in my business. During my freelancing career, I had the opportunity to work with some fantastic clients. But, I got away from the freedom. As my family has continued on our nomadic adventures, I have seen the need to grab back my time and build once and sell twice.

One of my goals with this newsletter was to peel back the curtain and give you a peek into what it looks like to make this transition.

So… as with many good entrepreneur stories, start…

I bought a domain name.

Yep. I am starting a new product and want to share the process with you from the start.

So, that will be the focus for the following few issues of Nerd Notes. I will share what I am trying and the results I get with each experiment as I attempt to launch something new.

So what is it?

This new product is called Block by Block. It will be a WordPress course heavily focused on exercises and challenges (I feel this is the best way to learn). It will teach you how to leverage WordPress blocks to create incredible WordPress websites.

I will share the thought process and systems I have used for over 13 years working with WordPress and my approach to creating with block themes.

Even if you are not in the WP space, this Build with Me (BWM) series will be helpful as I share what it takes to get a product off the ground and make my first dollar from it.

Next week, I will share the domain name and the details behind WHY I am creating this.

What do you want to learn from this build with me series?

Hit reply! I want to hear what questions you have about the process. What do you want me to share?

Keep Creating!
Chris

P.S. Can't wait until next week to see what the new brand is? I created an X account for the new brand and have already started to make connections on there. Come say hi!

👋 Hello Nerds! Today, I want to dive into one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced this year while traveling: finding time to work. As we move from one place to another, the days we’re not on the road are often spent exploring our current location. Balancing work with this lifestyle has required some creative solutions. Working in the car? One strategy I’ve adopted is working in the car. Yes, you read that right—in the car! It’s not always easy, battling the sun’s glare, the bumps on the...

👋 Hello! You can read this on CH.com if you prefer. You can always edit it…. As developers we can login to FTP, open the file, and make the change. It is that easy. Don’t overthink it. As a designer you can adjust that landing page design later, or fix the social template post launch. We spend so much time hoping to get it just perfect. But the truth is, we need to focus on getting the MVP out there. Figure out the core functionality and focus on that. Once that is ready, ship it. You can add...

Hello! When I first had the idea for Block by Block, I was excited. I opened up Notion and started to write out the idea and concept furiously. I was ready to go all in. But then I slowed myself down. I needed to validate the idea before I spent my time on it. Validation You can validate an idea in many ways. My process is quite simple. I look for tiny moments of validation and let them continue building on each other. These moments continue to stack up, which creates momentum for your idea....
